Mentor needs YOU!

heroquest-game-action.jpg

Now you too can be 13 again. Thanks to the wonder of photoshop and courtesy of OldScratch over at oldscratch.smackwell.com who coloured and created the master PSD file for the board and pieces. :-D

I haven't quite figured out the most efficient way to run turns yet, but the X,Y codes on the edge of this:

HQForumBoardsample.jpg

.. suggest a chess move like setup. Works for me.

Biff from OldScratch suggests in his thread about playing via forum:

I was thinking about how you would go about keeping track of turns and such, without making the thing run for 30 pages. What you can do is have the first post of the thread contain the map, and anything else the GM wants to include. The next four posts would be for the four players, in order of their in-game turn order, and then the post after that would be the GM's turn with everything the Monsters did.

Once a round is completed, the first player would then edit his post, posting his new actions over the old ones. Once he's done, next person goes, etc. That way the entire game could be kept within the first six posts of the thread, images wouldn't have to be reposted (see below), and everyone else's comments and communications could fall under the rest of the thread.

As far as image reposting and stuff, I was thinking that if you host the file somewhere and link it, you could just replace it for each turn, so when someone loads the page, the new, replaced image goes in the space, without having to make another post, or even edit the post with the map.

So basically, you'd host the image somewhere and name it HQ1.jpg or something, then link it here. After someone's turn, you do all the stuff you need in the photoshop file, call it HQ1.jpg, and replace it wherever you've been hosting it. This way you don't end up with 5000 images of one game.

Makes sense. I think we'll do that.

So, I got an: Elf, Barbarian, Dwarf and Wizard. Who wants what? :-D

We will use the European version of the rules as they encourage bitterness, back biting, extortion, epic jewery etc. All that good stuff! Also because 'Zargon' is just a bloody awful name. Morcar or gtfo. Team America version encourages co-operation, allows rooms to be searched more than once (wat!?) and other horrible, disgusting carebear nonsense.

Game was designed for 12 year old kids so shouldn't be too difficult to grasp for the uninitiated. Its not like there are many rules: loot treasure, kill monsters, lol at the Wizard's single body point and inevitable premature death..

Winter is coming! What a great game to fill the weekends with.
Last winter we played 'return of the witch lord', coming winter it will be 'wizards of Morcar'. All up in a cupboard upstairs.
Me and my kids, what a fun we'll have.

Cheers,

Thorgal

Re: Mentor needs YOU!

Ok so we have an Elf (stu) and a Barbie (moracai). Dwarf and Wizard still need takers. If you know someone who might want to play, please tell them where to come. :-D

So tempted to buy a copy off ebay even though the price is ridiculous. Regardless, I have now got hold of all the board tokens and all the spell and equipment card decks in digital form. So at least we can begin as soon as we have enough players. :-D

In the mean time here's some more eye candy:

Wiz4lyfe (however brief wlol).

So we need another player, I've even resorted to asking co-workers. :-X Someone must have a friend capable of interwebbing 10 minutes a day! I guestimate you need an IQ of about 48 to grasp the rules (all 8 pages of very large type). Yes. We. Can.

Re: Mentor needs YOU!

Ok beecthiz! We have a quorn again and - like all the best faux animal products - we're less than 5% fat. I'd like to introduce: btsjorehypfth. Which sounds kinda like ph'nglui mglw'nafh cthulhu r'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn. So I have high hopes! 8-D

Now the serious bsns of working out how to play this commences. I'll, err, just do that then. Gimme 5.

Ok. I've had a jug o' Ovaltine.

Here goes:

1. I start a thread for each dungeon and a corresponding thread for chatter, comments, sperging etc.

2. As suggested I take post #1 of the thread which will be called TheDungeonName (GM) and will contain the blurb and the first tile.

3. I then post replies to that first post thus reserving #'s 2, 3, 4 & 5.
I change the subject of those replies to 'Elf', 'Barbarian', 'lolWizard', 'Dwarf' etc. Here I store all your info, char sheet, body points, equipment and active spells/item cards etc.

4. I will then post branches off the OP for each turn (thereby isolating your character branches at the top of the thread). These additional branches will be called TheDungeonName (1), TheDungeonName (2) etc. and will contain that turn's updated dungeon tile and combat/s, searches, wandering monsters, swag etc.

5. Each branch off the OP will contain the game image from each subsequent turn plus the character moves copy-pasted from your posts to preserve the moves for posterity. I have no idea why anyone would ever want to read through it, but hey, why not. Its no extra work tbh. I will also tag on the next turn's movement dice results.

5. I'll host all the images on picasa web albums so the page will load as fast as your internet connection and won't make my wee raspberry pi shit itself. Especially if people hotlink. Which they always seem to do. The bastards.

6. For each turn, all you got to do is post a reply to the current TheDungeonName(x) branch and change the topic to 'Elf', 'Barbarian' etc. Your reply should contain your moves and any actions e.g:

Dwarf

Move:

a16 > g12
via. b12, b45, c34, h65

Action:

Search for secret doors

7. I will then copy/paste your move when I update the turn and post the next TheDungeonName (x) tile and delete the reply you made.

Sound simple?

WHAT THE LITERAL FUCK.

You, sirs, are serious sperglords. I salute you for even wanting to try this. |;-)

Oh, yeah, it goes without saying: If anyone just fecks off midway through or decides to take a 5 day holiday the whole thing will implode sharpish. Since we're all random interweb unreliable people, I'm expecting that to happen sooner rather than later. :-P

I figure we'll play through all the basic game, then all the expansions etc. This will create loooooong threads but will mean if you open the thread in thread mode you can just scroll down to follow each turn as it unfolds. You can cherry pick posts in the standard threaded mode for ease of access. Also, since each turn will be a branch off the OP, it will format nice and neatly. It won't chug because each post will be only a few lines plus an image hosted off site - which won't have much affect on page loads or server overhead because google is always going to be faster than the server.

PS: Now go wash your hands 14 times.

Re: Mentor needs YOU!

Haha yeah! I totally don't get how in the European rules only one player can search each room for treasure once. But in the American rules, you can all have a poke around, pop a few beers, toss some shrimps on the barbie etc. Aren't we supposed to be the filthy socialists?? :-P

I read the mostly US version bias HeroQuest fansites and I'm just confused. Its definitely not the game of escalating greed and selfishness, extortion, barter and loathing I so fondly recall. If it didn't end in a fist fight it wasn't worth playing! =-D

And who the fuck is .. Zargon? Wat.

Maybe in America, the letter Z is evil?
However, if we take away an 'n', and add a 'thrax', then Zargon becomes Zargothrax, and if you get that reference, than have an e-cookie.

Re: Mentor needs YOU!

Both of those are bit overrated in my opinion. I gave up on Breaking Bad after a few episodes of the 2nd season. And my balls are still aching after the latest session I had. Wouldn't mind another one, true, but my pussy of choice isn't available at the moment... :-X

Re: Mentor needs YOU!

Agree with regard Breaking Bad. I think most US tv series that enjoy any kind of rating success just get managed to mediocrity from their second season on. The only exception I can think of is Game of Thrones which started out as absolute rubbish and progressed to a half decent drama. Presumably once they hired some actual writers and got rid of the 'we need this for the teenage boys demograph' soft porn nonsense.

Breaking Bad .. what a huge anti climax. Wow. They should have just ended it on the Fring season with 'I won'. Hard to top that.

Well, since it is alternate history, technically speaking Zargothrax was released 21 years ago when the Chaos Wizards attacked the Knights of Crail on Triton.

Well, the thing about BB is there was never any intention for Walt to win.
He's supposed to go from the everyman who garners audience sympathy and support to the villain; to pass through the moral grey areas and end up reviled. Granted, it's difficult to feel a focussed dislike for what Walt becomes(or perhaps always was) when he associates so closely with neo-Nazis.

Having said all that, just because I liked it doesn't mean anyone else has to.

Re: Mentor needs YOU!

Oh I enjoyed it, it wasn't terrible. It just felt weak and a little homogenised. Jesse has to get away, he has to refuse to kill Walt. All the bad guys have to die. Walt has to die etc. For me, they ruined it entirely by having Walt and Jesse become opposed forces. The strength of the show was the two of them: chalk and cheese, chaos and order, somehow contriving to triumph over the odds through ignorance, Jesse's street smarts and Walt's naive genius. It was a bromance show. All the hysterical drama toward the end and the damp squib of major characters suddenly behaving completely irrationally (having 3-4 different directors and writers for the last 5 episodes was unwise imho) just let it down.

A good show, but coulda be a great show. :-)
